Ilam is a town in eastern Nepal that borders Darjeeling, a famous tea producing region. The cultivation methods are exactly the same,
Before Maekawa went to buy tea, it had no name recognition whatsoever, and it was being bought cheaply by middlemen and sold as Darjeeling tea.
"Ilam black tea is the most delicious in the world!" Impressed by the taste, Maekawa-san didn't just go and buy the tea, he traveled all over the Himalayas and personally transported the selected tea leaves from the tea plantations to the airport across Nepal.
Thanks to Maekawa's efforts, the people of Ilam came to understand the value of their products, and they secured support from the Netherlands and expanded their sales channels to countries around the world, including Canada and Germany.
He succeeded in doubling the residents' income. For this achievement, he was awarded the International Civilian Order of Merit by the Nepalese government at the end of 2019.
The recommended way to make tea is to brew Ilam Black Tea from Shangri-La Tea Garden in cold water.
